Did Someone Say Cocktails??

Did you know that scent cocktailing is a thing?  Well it is, and it’s pure genius.  Perfume is such a personal thing, it can tell someone a lot about you before you even say a word.  It causes triggers in the brain that subconsciously let people know you are warm and inviting, bright and fun, sexy and seductive, it’s like a personal announcement that speaks before you do. Isn’t it  flattering when you receive compliment on your scent? Finding your signature scent that lasts throughout the day can be a challenge, but it’s totally worth it! There are a thousand different choices out there, but creating a scent that is all your own can really make you stand out.   So now you ask how do I do that?...

Here Are Some Tips-

It can be a little tricky to create a new scent and not smell like stale roses and mothballs, and no one wants to smell like Grandma’s closet….no matter how much you love her.  In doing my research, and there is a lot of information out there, the list of fragrance notes and blends are almost endless, from top notes to middle notes, tea scents, woodsy how much time do you have??  Here are some basics and some resources to help you create the perfect cocktail.

  • Start with your favorite perfume. Figure out what your preferred scent is. Is it fresh and bright, or or musky, warm and seductive? Then you want to pick the opposite of that to layer with.

For example if your scent is citrusy go with something that is warm like vanilla. Pick fragrances that have opposite notes of each other.

  • Citrus/ Floral = Bright and Fresh paired with Warm / Musky = Heavy and Strong.

Finding the citrus and floral notes can be easy, the tricky part can be the heavier scents.

However, there is an easy “go to” for the warm scents. Remember that Vanilla pairs well with                almost anything.

Other easy warm scents are sandalwood, coconut, patchouli and almond.  All of these will take that bright citrus or floral scent and add an element of sexy, a hint of seduction.

Some easy fresh scents to start with are are grapefruit, lemon, lime, pretty much anything citrus.  If you love floral scents look for rose, jasmine, honeysuckle and lavender.  These are all scents that blend well with vanilla, coconut, sandalwood and are easier to find by themselves and ready to layer.

The Take Away

Don’t over think it, you don’t have to be a chemist to get this right. You don’t have to go out and buy another expensive perfume. Body spray, lotion or body oils are great ways to keep the price down while layering your scents. Using a body spray is one of my favorite ways to layer because often times it is lighter than a perfume and won’t be overwhelming. You can start with your body lotion as the 1st scent. The idea is to have fun with it. Here are a few pairings to consider that may get your ideas flowing:

Jo Malone London Peony & Blush Suede Cologne, Bobbi Brown Beach, Jo Malone London Earl Grey & Cucumber, Clinique Happy with Bath and Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar body cream, Demeter Bamboo with Thierry Mugler Angel. Ralph Lauren Midnight Romance and Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio
